Saltwater Reports / Rudee
« Last post by neofite on Today at 01:34:37 PM »
With the Strawberry festival, high water and inaction of late, decided to try my luck at the Rudee Inlet.   Surprisingly, was not crowded, maybe because there were no fish!

08 - 1200 on the outgoing. Tried for flounder and anything else.  Not a single tap.   It was warm n windy.   Back to fresh water.  Spoke to several folks and they had similar tales.

Tried the Munden to Milldam trip this morning.  Way too windy and the hordes were out as well.  Crossing North Landing when I came back about 1100 was like a game of Frogger (dating myself).

Couple dink White Perch and Crappie, no bass and a bunch of Gar hits.

Awesome!!!   Those Chopper Blues are so much fun.   In my experience, they do not "tire out".  Had what may have been a close to 40 incher two years ago.  My braid cut through the first eye of the rod he was screaming so much drag.  Lost him trying to lip grip (now I gots a net).   When I reviewed my track, it was a 7 min battle in a 4 leaf clover pattern.  Have had a 36 and the one I lost that day was easily larger.  Now I got a hankering to go try and find another, something for the skillet would be nice as well.

Interesting.  I can't seem to entice a topwater bite, except for Crappie in the Back Bay, weird.

Saltwater Reports / Lynnhaven 5/26 - PB 35"Chopper + 29"Red

Out at sunrise - first came the Red - about an hour before high tide.  All of these fish in the past couple of days came from the exact same location, I'd say less than a 100 yard radius.  I knew right away she was over slot (and I'm hungry for some blackened Redfish) and put up a nice fight.  On inspection she had many of the little red worms sticking out but still fat and otherwise healthy.

The Chopper still has my heart racing.  Just like the other night's Blue, this one came at exactly high tide slack water.  The runs were amazing (he easily took twice as much line as the 30 incher) and after the first jump I knew he was hooked well because if he had swallowed the hook he would have cut the line.  This was a 4/0 heavy circle hook (Mustad Demon? I don't know? on sale @ Wallyworld) set right in the corner of his mouth.  I brought him in slowly as I definitely wanted him tired.  "I SAW COLOR" I said to myself when he cruised by, laughing, as I looked for the harpoon.  I learned from the other night that I don't really want him jumping at the boat.  Nice and easy - he was tired - over the rail and nary a toe was in jeopardy....I didn't get those crocs yet.

Met a friend out there who missed the excitement but did take the pic about an hour later (Blue had expired).  We hung out for a couple more hours but not a bite.  The water was getting real shallow real fast with this SW wind and back to the dock before 11.

This is my personal best Blue from the yak and me wants to go back but the honey do list MUST now be attended to...(if I want to get out there again early Monday AM).  Word to the wise - go early or go late as the traditional Memorial Day boat launch cluster is on.

It is on my list.
But not on a holiday weekend!
It may take a while to figure out.
I do remember there is a 40 ft hole and on the bottom in January they caught citation walleye.
Yes summer has arrived!

Launched at daylite
Saw them hitting the surface
The water was so rough I almost flipped turning around
Fished 1 cove
Landed 3, 15”,15” an 17”
Missed at least 5 due to grass, my 20lb test was no match for the grass, as soon as I let up they were gone!
All on topwater, most blowups I have ever had.
Out at 9:30, just missed the crowd of beach goers.
