Something I never thought about.

If you store your rods over night or over the winter you need to loosen your drag. You should have no tension what so ever when your reel and rod is not in use. Lessened learned by me.

Pulling in a striper on Braded line by hand was not a fun time. Got to get new drag washer for my Daiwa reel.

Spinners,

Good looking out. I think this gets overlooked by a lot of people, which as you described can cost you a good reel and maybe even a better fish. I also learned the lesson many years ago when one seized up on me after storing for a winter. That's not how you want to start your spring season.
